Cashculator - Personal Finance App Reviews

I have just spent my money for nothing

Dissapointing app. You cant create subcategories. You better to use a regular spread sheet. I dont reccommment it. Aplicativo decepcionante. Não é possível criar subcategorias. Melhor usar uma planinha comum. Não recomendo.

Muito bom! / Very good!

O aplicativo ajuda bastante para fazer um planejamento financeiro, e consertou alguns bugs da versão anterior. / This app is really useful, it helps when youre trying to plan your finances, and this new version fixed some bugs from the previous version.

Great program

Expresses the Mac theme, "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

Good Program. Ive been looking for a program like this, and tried out a few, this is my favorite. The only thing missing is a calendar to remind you when to make a payment. That would make this program perfect. Overall very pleased with my purchase.

No Import - otherwise *****

This is a very unique app. The only app that I found so far that has a vertical timeline. Other app offer more or less all the same except this one. BUT, Im still NOT using Cashculator since it cannot import. I would love to use Cashculator in combination with my other financial app. One app for gathering different bank accounts in one place and Cashculator for visual review of recurring and non-recurring expenses for each month. Love the clarity of the interface and included functions of Cashculator, but since I have few years of my financial data that I do not have time to be adding manually to Cashculator its unsusable to me. I do not care about any iCloud synching, Im waiting for import data option.

Great app - easy yet powerful

Hello. I was getting tired of complicated pash-hisory-oriented applications and decided to give this one a try. It is very good for forward planning - I made rough 2 years plan quite fast. And it allows to create scenarios - it helps you with quick "what-if" analysis and decision making regarding your future plans. And its simple and visual - the Mac way! Highly recommended.

Super customer service

I had issues with updater (my not understanding how to do it). Jacob from Apparent Software got back to me immediately and helped me get it straight. I love this application. Simple to use and everything I need to keep track of what I spend.

Solid Forecaster-Needs Finer Grain Resolution Month to Month

It seams all personal finance software is focused on the past which is important but useless without knowing how to apply this to something. If you have other software for budget management and a reasonble history of your typical income/expense you will be amazed how this software can be utilized to understand your finacial future. Read the online manual for specifics but all-in-all this does a great job of what it was designed to do. I have been using an old spreadsheet-based entry forecasting program for many years which is no longer in development so I was excited to see this at the App store. There really is nothing out there to compare Cashculator to except for the little known software I have been using. My current software has one critical ability Cashculator lacks which I will describe here. My only critisism, and one that has kept me from completely abandoning my previous software is that Cashculator takes the approach that forecasting is "big picture". What this means is that It assumes income/expenses need only be tracked on a "once-a-month" basis as though you receive and spend all your money on the first of the month. In the screenshot above you will see the line from month to month is straight. THAT IS VERY DECEIVING! If you actually plot your income/expenses monthy it is most definately not a straight line (up or down) throughout the month but a series of ups and downs that fluxtuate above and below a straight line depending on when you receive or spend income throughout the month. If you try (or simply have no choice) but to keep your account balances at a minimum, the straight-line method employed here will not show you where in the month your balances fall below zero just because the 1st of the month balances happen to be net-positive! I only like to keep enough in the checking to cover my budgeted expenses plus a buffer. Everything else gets put to work in savings or investments. My previous software allows exact date and frequency income/expenditure control. Say for example I have a 2000 balance at the beginning of the month but a 3000 expense (mortgage due) mid month. Then I know I will have 2000 of income after the expense but before end of month (Im a freelancer). Month to month Cashculator shows net positive straight line but my balances in the middle of month fell below zero if I was not paying attention! It gets way more complicated to track the more income/expense you have that do not correspond to beginning of the month. Forecasting is critical for freelancers but this software trades accuracy for "big-picture" which is unfortunate in my opinion. It essentially lulls you into thinking there is more available month to month than there actually is. Not good for prdicting future expenditures. I would recommend they implement the ability to assign dates to income/expense entries vs the first-of-the-month-only model so you can really see your spending. Having the ability to look out 1-20 years in a straight line is fine but if you really want to take control of the beauty of forecasting, you need to see your money EXACTLY as it goes in and out within say a 1 to 6-month range. That is really as far as any of us can reasonbly predict our finances. It is a bit more time consuming to set-up but once you do, the power of forcasting becomes apparent. Overall though very positive and hope future releases will bring the ability mentioned above. I like it so much I will be using both Cashculator for "big picture" and scenario planning and my old software for finer grain month to month detail. More work but really worth it when you see it in action.

Cashculater

I love this app, it motivates me to keep track of all my expenses and it easily sorts all my spending and income.

Great - except now that I have an iPad sorely missing iPad app for it

Great overview of my budgeting, but now that I have an iPad, not to mention an iPhone, am realizing that a Mac-only app is rather limiting...otherwise great!

effortless budget

This is exactly what Ive been looking for. All of the rediculous programs you buy for budgeting have so many variables and formulations, that they end up being completely wrong, and too difficult to understand. This version is simple, and plain as can be. Just the basics....

perfect for me.

I bought this app to keep myself accountable for how I spend my money. It has done just that.

Great application AND great customer support!

This app would probably be a 4 or 5 star application on its own. I really like it and use it regularly. It is definitely a solid five stars for sure after I recently had to contact customer service and was very impressed by how fast and helpful they were. When the 1.2.10 update came out there was a slight glitch that made the application not functional in snow leopard (functional just in lion I believe) and I just happened to be using the application to make a totally new budget when I happened to apply the update. All of a sudden the application wouldnt work at all! You can imagine I was not happy... BUT ~ I contacted customer service. They responded very quickly, were unaware of the problem, but instead of blowing me off, asked me to take a screenshot of the error message. I sent it in, and within 24 hours (if not sooner) got a response that it would be taken care of and the 1.2.11 upgrade was out to fix the glitch. I think I actually saw the upgrade before I had even read the email (though it was sent out before the upgrade, I just hadnt gotten to it). All and all, I was extremely impressed at how quickly they not only responded to the problem, but responded and fixed the problem. Some apps on the app store or online have absolutely useless customer service. This is NOT one of them! I will agree with a previous user that this program definitely focuses on big picture more than the details. If you are starting out with this app and not switching from a more detailed app it will take some time to enter things in. I have been entering each purchase I make under its appropriate category (ie groceries, entertainment, gas, etc.). It is definitely doable, but a bit tedious, and seeing an overview of the individual purchases is a bit difficult. So if you already have an idea of how much you do (or can) spend on each area, it would be easier in this app, but its not necessary. If you do already have discrete stable bills, etc, and want an app that will forecast out for you, this one is exceptional!! I just wish there was a little more detail in listing individual purchases, but thats not really what this app is for, so I wouldnt necessarily ding them for not having it either. As a sidenote ~ I wanted/needed budget forecasting as Im a graduate student, and therefore live off of school loans. This app has been really helpful to show what months I might need to cut back on certain areas and by how much to make it to my next loan payment, etc so Im not totally blindsided when three weeks from my next disbursement I have zero dollars in my account! =) Its happened before... so this was definitely a beneficial purchase! I would definitely recommend this.

LOVE IT!

This app is awesome! I thought it was going to be just ok, but it really rocks! Its worth it! Well done!

Keep Looking

Not worth it - waste of money

Just what I needed!

As another reviewer has said, this is a great tool for budgeting and planning for large purchases! I am going to be buying a car soon and this program has allowed me to really see where I spend my money and helped me cut down on frivolous purhcases so that I can save up. I started with the Free version and loved it so much that I bought the whole thing so that I could plan further into the future. I dont care about syncing stuff with my bank statements and much prefer to enter in my purchases at the end of each day--it helps me keep track and not overspend. I would highly recommend this program, worth the money!!!!!!!!

optional

My favorite Home-financ. app very ease and straight forward , recommend to friends.

Only lacks ability to print

I have been using personal financial management (PFM) software since the late 90s. I abandoned Quicken a little over two years ago when they gave the finger to Mac users, and have been using iBank since then. Quicken had very good budgeting and iBanks stinks, quite frankly. Cashculator is almost exactly what I need. Two things prevent it from being 5-star in my opinion. (1) you cannot print out your budget. This seems like a basic functionality which has never been addressed by the developers. (2) it is a standalone product, and I have to manually enter monthly income and expenses. I really wish that IGG who developed iBank, would buy out Cashculator and make it a part of iBank so there could be a complete PFM product for Mac users.

Sorry, too many crashes

App kept crashing when trying to add icons to new categories after awhile. Really wanted this app to work, since I need a budgeting tool. But I dont want to waste time with minutiae before I can get to the meat of working with the program.

Works well

This app works well for what I need. It’s simple & helps me to track monthly expenses. I like this app because it does not ask me to link up with other accounts such as banking accounts or credit card accounts. I simply enter in my receipts each week, and at the end of the month I can see how much money I’ve spent. I can see several months at a time, and compare my spending. I don’t use any of the charts or graphs, as I really only wanted to track expenses. Overall, a good app.
